First course: What is virtual education? (2nd version)


This course will be delivered in Spanish. Nevertheless, bilingual on-line support will be available to all English speaking people wishing to take this course.

This introductory course will provide participants with the conceptual, theoretical and practical basis of online education.

Specific objectives

  • To understand technological means applied in the online teaching-learning process.
  • To familiarize participants with adult learning characteristics and to identify the needs of online learners.
  • To learn about distance learning curriculum.

Unit 1: Online education approaches

  1. Definition of e-learning
  2. Why online teaching?
  3. Difference between online and distance learning
  4. E-learning problems
  5. Learning communities
  6. Quality standardization in online education

Unit 2: Online education learning process

  1. Learning and constructivism
  2. Significant vs. repetitive learning
  3. Training methodologies
  4. The teaching-learning process
  5. Learning evaluation

Unit 3: Online curriculum

  1. Components of an online curriculum
  2. Design of an online curriculum
  3. Levels of design of an online curriculum
  4. Aspects of a didactic unit

Duration and cost

The course is 8 weeks long and it is expected that participants spend approximately 10 hours a week to successfully complete the course.

Duration: May 5 to June 27, 2008

Registration fee is USD 200 and entitles you to:

  • Permanent tutoring by high academic level professors throughout the course.
