Second course: How to develop an online course


This course will be delivered in Spanish. Nevertheless, bilingual on-line support will be available to all English speaking people wishing to take this course.

This course will provide participants with the basic elements for the production of online courses. Topics include the characteristics and difficulties of online teaching strategies for the production of online courses and evaluation methods.

Specific objectives

  • To identify the tutor’s specific characteristics and abilities for implementing learning strategies and achieving teaching improvement.
  • To learn how to use online education tools available in most virtual platforms.
  • To practice different online education evaluation mechanisms, its limitations and peculiarities.

Course contents

Unit 1: Role of virtual tutors

  1. Distinctive characteristics of virtual tutors
  2. Practical work performed by virtual tutors
  3. Difficulties for virtual tutoring
  4. Importance of detecting different students' needs

Unit 2: Course design

  1. Basic tools found in most virtual platforms
  2. Technical design strategies
  3. Didactic materials: issues of confidentiality and copyright

Unit 3: On-line education evaluation

  1. Continuous evaluation
  2. Different kinds of evaluation
  3. Evaluation of forums
  4. Students' follow-up

Duration and cost

The course is 8 weeks long and it is expected that participants spend approximately 10 hours a week to successfully complete the course.

Duration: April 28 to June 20, 2008

Registration fee is USD 200 and entitles you to:

  • Permanent tutoring by high academic level professors throughout the course.
